project type: Loft remodel
design: Laura Ivan
surface area: 2,800 SF
description: Designed for a couple in their mid-thirties, the existing 18 ft.tall space occupies the top two floors and roof of a newly converted industrial building in a central area of the city. The loft is defined by the exposed concrete walls and the large windows, while the new wall interventions are rendered in white. On the lower level, where the main living spaces are located, the intention was to emphasize
the height of the space while keeping an open and efficient layout, each area flowing into the next one. The kitchen and dining room were placed in a very bright area. Separating the private zones from the public ones, a staircase inspired from the industrial look of the space leads up from the living room to the mezzanine sleeping area. The main bedroom is similar to a hotel suite, directly connected to an open-bathroom and followed by a large dressing-room. The new materials were selected in warm, rich natural finishes such as walnut floors and cabinets, earth tone tiles and marble counter tops. The finishes not only look high end, but they are durable and will develop in character as they age. Everything was planned to maximize the space and to offer a feeling of size (greatness). The general layout was conceived like a graphic architectural walk and the main purpose was to create a vertical loft, where both floors are stitched together into one bright continuous space.
